You are kindly invited to an inter-community discussion to consolidate findings on public participation in the Corridors of Freedom research project facilitated by Planact and the University of Witwatersrand School of Architecture and Planning
o understand the nature of participatory processes in selected corridors, Planact conducted thirty (30) one on one in-depth interviews with individuals from diverse backgrounds/interests. The selected corridors are the Empire-Perth, Louis Botha Avenue & south of Empire Perth). The preliminary findings from the interviews conducted then informed the conversations and themes discussed at the three (3) focus group forums held with communities along the selected corridors.
Some cross-cutting issues raised are:
• Accessibility (cross /along / exclusion)
• Transport (Taxi / Rea Vaya)
• Safety / Security
• Densities (Housing)
• Business Enterprises (opportunities)
• Environment (heritage)

Wits University and Planact are partners with University College London on a research project called ‘Governing the Future City: A comparative analysis of governance innovations in large-scale urban developments in Shanghai, London, and Johannesburg’. The project explores large-scale urban developments in all three cities. Through a specific focus on the Corridors of Freedom we are looking at the extent to which large urban projects are providing for the needs of residents and businesses.
