The Planact Way.

Institutional Development: The ‘Planact Way’ refers to a project in which Planact’s history and project interventions over the years are being synthesised into a learning document intended for dissemination and discussion within the development field. The key objectives of this project are:

  • To generate interest in, and appreciation for, the role of independent civil society organizations (CSOs) in community-building and development.
  • To document a case of institution-building in the CSO sector within the context of historical change.
  • To contribute to a sense of shared history and identity amongst current and former Planact staff and communities in which Planact has worked
  • To promote an understanding of participatory methods in the practice of community development.
  • To share project-level knowledge and experiences with the wider development community in a field where much is accomplished but too little is documented and shared.
  • To provide a reflection document for other CSOs in order to build a network of those advocating for the rights of the poor in SA cities and to strengthen their capacity to defend this space.
This programme will benefit Planact’s current work and reinvigorate its mission through establishing a reflective connection with its past. Click here for more detail on this initiative.

The project consists of:
  1. A research report focusing on Planact’s history, identity, and impact (in progress)
  2. A conference presenting various perspectives on Planact’s work and the contribution of the NGO sector to development and governance: NGOs as Innovators and Agents of Change; held August 4-5, 2006.

  3. A publication resulting from the history project and the conference papers (in progress)
