We are excited to share that the VIP (Ventilated Improved Pit) toilet backslab installations in Lawley Station has been completed although more households still need support.

Residents have taken proactive steps to address sanitation safety challenges caused by broken VIP backslabs. They are currently exploring and implementing alternative methods to construct and install new backslabs, aiming to improve safety and functionality.
These community-led efforts highlight the ongoing need for the City of Johannesburg to respond to and address the sanitation challenges experienced by residents in informal settlements across the city.
This initiative aligns with Planact’s broader work in supporting communities to improve access to safe, dignified, and sustainable sanitation services through advocacy, capacity building, and partnership with local government.
